Jal Jivan Mission: Empowering Rural India with Safe Water

The Jal Jivan Mission (JJM) is a transformative initiative launched by the Government of India in 2019, with the mission to ensure that every rural household in the country has access to safe and adequate drinking water by 2024. This ambitious program aims to provide functional tap water connections (HarGhar Jal) to over 190 million rural homes, addressing a crucial need for clean water in India’s rural communities.

Core Objectives of Jal Jivan Mission

Universal Access to Tap Water: The mission's primary goal is to provide tap water to every rural household, eliminating the need for families to rely on unsafe or distant water sources.
Sustainability of Water Resources: JJM places a strong emphasis on sustainable water management practices. It promotes the conservation of water sources, groundwater recharge, and rainwater harvesting to ensure a continuous supply for future generations.
Water Quality Assurance: The mission focuses on providing clean and safe drinking water by building and upgrading infrastructure to treat and distribute water. Regular testing and monitoring ensure water is free from harmful contaminants.
Community Participation and Empowerment: A key feature of the mission is its community-driven approach. Villages are encouraged to actively participate in water management through Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) to oversee and maintain water infrastructure.
Greywater Management: Jal Jivan Mission also promotes the treatment and reuse of greywater for agricultural and non-potable purposes, contributing to water conservation efforts.
